TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison to Sir E [Edwin] Ray Lankester, KCB, FRS
Date13 March 1912
DescriptionThe Royal Society received the old proof with the collotype plates attached and have now sent these on to Waterlow's for press. They have also seen Ede & Townsend about the new half tone plate, Harrison gives details of their work, including that they did not know the size of the Philosophical Transactions and therefore the drawing was overlarge.
Miss Woodward has sent the block of her new figures (45, 45).
With regard to the new lettering Harrison explains the difficulty of reference lines indicated and that the letters are inside the blocks though outside the drawings. Harrisons, as printers, would not plug blocks for additional letter, or pass them on to an engraver for that purpose without instruction. Additions inside a block have to be made by engravers, and if the additions are awkward it becomes just as cheap to prepare new blocks.
Harrison discusses a way to save a few shillings by the engravers plugging the blocks.
