Date19 March 1912
DescriptionBradford has the honour to trasmit to trasmitt the information of a second report detailing the results hitherto obtained by the Committee on Glass Workers' cataract.
The work carried out has led to some important conclusions, they have ascertained that certain ultra-violet rays of the spectrum, which form an important constituent of the radiations from incandescant glass, have an effect on the portion of the eye concerned in maintained the nutrition of the lens; and inasmuch as cataract may ensure as a result of impaired nutrition of the lens. Various kinds of glass having the property of cutting off the ultra-violet rays have been prepared by Sir William Crookes, with a view to the manufacture of spectacles that would protect workmen from the effects.
Bradford is authorised to ask, in view of the important of the results obtained and of the further problems requiring investigation, an additional grant to the Committee.
