Description'The Record.
Many thanks for yours of the 3rd. I am afraid I created a wrong impression in your mind about the blocks. My question was directed, not to making the blocks, which we have or shortly shall have in our possession, but to printing them, which the President thought it would be better for your Press to do for the sake of uniformity, as the blocks and plates are in the hands of different people at present.
I am sending you now, as an instalment of the whole, 15 process blocks and 1 photogravure plate (Kelvin portrait), making 16 out of the 20 plates proposed to have as illustrations of the book; the remaining four are 2 process blocks of illustrations which I hope to get in tomorrow and 2 photogravure portraits (Darwin & Lister) which are not yet ready. I thought it best however to send on now those which are ready in order to avoid risk of their being misplaced in the confusion of the approaching Soiree.'
