TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, to Professor Louis Napoleon George Filon, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date18 October 1912
DescriptionSir Joseph Larmor has handed on Filon's letter of 15 October, and asked Harrison to answer it for him. The difficulty of doing anything in the direction Filon suggests, at this stage, is that his acquaintance with the paper has been made in the confidential position of a referee. On one previous occasion great trouble was caused by knowledge so acquired at the same time as the paper under reference. Mr Jeffery could not add a footnote to Russell's paper without the latter's consent, and it rests with the communicator - Filon - to to consult with Mr Jeffery as to the steps he may wish to take. That consultation could hardly be made properly until the paper appears in print.

Harrison suggests that Filon should do nothing until Dr Russell paper is read and therefore ipso facto published. Then he should communicate with Dr [Charles] Chree, the communicator of Russell's paper, therefore keeping the matter within the Society, with a view to either adding a footnote on behalf of Jeffery, or sending in a short note for publication by the Society, to be printed in the 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' immediately after Russell's paper, if possible.
