| Description | Sending herewith a memorandum [no enclosures] which he would like Speyer to bring before the Committee [to discuss the funds from the Robert Falcon Scott 'Terra Nova' expedition] tomorrow, as he cannot make it himself. There is a private matter which has just been brought to Geikie's notice regarding the various objects of personal interest on board the Terra Nova. He has been told that they are being distributed and that there is some dissatisfaction among those interested in them.
Of course all instruments that were borrowed should be restored to their owners in proper condition. Geikie does not know whose property these are. Items of a personal or sentimental nature, such as a piano, books etc., might be distributed among the staff or relatives of those who have died. Lady Scott should obviously have a voice in the disposal of these things. It is a delicate matter to interfere in, but Geikie was asked to see whether or not the Mansion House Committee can do anything about it.
Believes that Commander Evans claims the right to dispose of everything as he thinks best. Whether if this is true or not, it would a pity if [bad feeling] was caused on account of these relics. |
