TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to Allan Wyon
Date8 December 1891
DescriptionRix has been asked by the Royal Society's Treasurer, John Evans, to privately contact Wyon regarding the 'imperfect state' of the Royal Medal dies. As the medals are officially presented by the Queen to the Society they are not really allowed to speak about it, but they do so as it is possible that they might not notice unless attention was directed to the issue, and it could be within Wyon's role to suggest to the proper authorities any measures which might be advisable.

Rix, in particular, notes that on the obverse of the medal there is a 'disfiguring defect' on Queen Victoria's cheek, and that one of the letters of the inscription is broken. Also, on the reverse, one of the mathematical figures, likely to have been taken from Isaac Newton's 'Principa' is almost entirely 'obliterated'.
