Description | Rix states that their messenger, McCalla, who was recommended by Wheeler and has proved a 'useful and reliable lad', will be leaving them at Christmas, and so he asks if she will nominate another 'protégé' to the vacant post. He goes on to emphasise the debt of gratitude owed her by the Royal Society for her efforts in selecting previous employees, all of whom have turned out well, and one of whom still works at the Society as their Library Assistant.
He outlines the hours of the available role as 9am to 6pm, with occasional work until 7 or 7.30pm on Thursdays, and an early finish of 1pm on Saturdays, with the pay given as five shillings a week to begin with. If Wheeler is inclined to select a candidate, Rix asks that she get them 'the biggest & the best you can for the money'. Wheeler is to let them know if they are asking too much in repeatedly requesting this of her. |
