TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to E Maude Thompson, Principal Librarian, British Museum
Date15 June 1891
DescriptionRix has been instructed by Dr John Evans, Treasurer of the Royal Society and Trustee of the British Museum, to write on a matter affecting the progress of work in which the Museum authorities have always shown themselves ready to assist. The two women abstracting titles for the Society's 'Catalogue of Scientific Papers' have been prevented from using the library due to their young age, and Rix asks if this difficulty could be overcome, asking if the proviso which admits those under the age of 21 for 'literary or scientific research' might be applied in this case.

He further states that the work will cause minimal disruption for them, as the women will come with the slips ready prepared, having previously located the references in the Society's copy of the Museum Catalogue, which had been presented to them to assist in their work. Also, they would only use the Museum Library when works were unavailable elsewhere. The women in question are noted as trustworthy and of high character, and their details given as Miss E Chapman, who is 20, and Miss L Burfield, who will be 17 in July.
