TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Clerk, London County Council
Date3 July 1891
DescriptionThe Clerk's letter of 25 June (reference 4367) was laid before the President and Council of the Royal Society at yesterday's meeting, and Foster has been directed to respond.

He states that it is almost impossible to form an adequate estimate of the total cost of the proposed enquiry, as the 'magnitude and nature of the observations and experiments' which will be necessary cannot be anticipated at the outset. The President and Council agree that the inquiry will lead to practical results applicable outside of London, and that it will be of 'great scientific importance', so as to be suitable for the aid of the Government Grant in aid of Scientific Research. As a consequence, they suggest that the London County Council include in their estimates 250 pounds as a first instalment of payment towards the expenses of the inquiry, and if they do this the Royal Society will authorise their Treasurer to apply to the Government Grant Committee for £250 for the same purpose. Also, when the inquiry is sufficiently advanced, the Society will report to the County Council on the progress of the research, with special reference to any further expenditure which seems necessary. If any of the 250 pounds remains, it will be returned to the County Council.
