Description | Foster communicates that, following a recent meeting of the Royal Society's Library Committee, it was decided in consultation with some of the Fellows, that the collection of maps and charts should be discontinued, partially on the grounds of the increased demands on their limited storage space.
In relation to the charts of the Dépôt de la Marine, the Committee were influenced by the fact that the charts are also presented to the nearby Royal Geographical Society, where they are freely accessible to the Fellows of the Royal Society. They propose, therefore, to present the collection to the Bodleian Library, Oxford, having ascertained that they are not currently sent to any of the libraries in Oxford and that such a gift would be welcomed there. A further proposal, that the collection of charts might be added to by the transfer to the Bodleian of the annual grant of charts previously made to the Royal Society, is also put forward. |
