| Description | White has advised the lithographers of Evans' criticism of their estimate of 38 pounds and eight shillings for seven plates, and they have explained the relatively high cost as being due to the laborious instrumental measurement necessary to fix the exact position of each dot in the diagrams, which would need to be done by one of their best workers. They have offered to carefully place the dots by eye alone, which would reduce the estimate by thirty shillings.
With regard to printing, they state that the estimate was already for four plates on one stone and three on another, so no reduction would be possible. Furthermore, the firm adds that the lettering on the plates is particularly heavy which contributes to the cost. Should Evans approve of the alternative suggested, they will revise their estimate accordingly. |
