TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to Professor Michael Foster, [Royal Society]
Date12 October 1891
DescriptionRix explains that he is forwarding the enclosed [not included - a request from the British Institute of Preventive Medicine for use of their rooms] as it ought to be answered before Thursday, as the Secretary will want to send summonses. He further notes that he has only replied to state that he will refer the matter to the Royal Society's officers, and to express the opinion that the porter and charwoman should be paid a gratuity for their efforts should the arrangement become permanent.

Rix summarises the earlier case of the Congress of Hygiene and Demography who did not pay anyone at the Society, despite the fact that the charwoman had to arrive early every morning to keep up with 'the dirt they made', Mrs Kennedy made teas, and Mr Kennedy was occupied during both his regular working hours and into the evening. Kennedy is said to have sent in a claim, which has been ignored, with Rix terming this 'exceedingly mean'.
