TitleCopy letter from William Thomson, to Herrn Professor Helmholtz, Foreign Member of the Royal Society
Date29 October 1891
DescriptionOn behalf of the Royal Society, Thomson offers the 'heartiest congratulations on the happy occasion which brings to you the homage and the good wishes of the cultivators of science all over the world' [Helmholtz's 70th birthday], and their gladness at the 'opportunity of testifying our admiration of the genius which has inspired your life-long labours, and for the splendid additions with which you have enriched our knowledge of nature'.

Thomson hopes that Helmholtz will continue with his research for both the benefit of his country and 'mankind at large', and that among the expressions of sympathy and admiration he receives, there will be none more heartfelt than those offered by the Society.
