TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society to Miss C E Collet, 4 Vernon Chambers, Theobald's Road, WC
Date3 February 1915
Description'Thank you for your letter concerning Joseph Collet, an early Fellow of the Society. There is very possibly an error in our "Record" entry, indeed your statement would seem to prove it.
Our Journal Book of 1711 merely quotes "Mr Collet". Concerning that particular period we are very deficient in other records, and Mr Collet did not sign the Charter Book which means that though "elected" he was never formally "admitted". We are accordingly without a signature to assist us.
In a MS Register of the Fellows of the Society, of about date 1800, the name appears filled out as "Phillibert Collet" and a date of death is given (1718). This would seem to be the origin of our "Record" form the name, though on what grounds the above name and date were entered I am quite unable to say. The grounds of election are seldom recorded at that date, the present practice of a written "certificate" not coming in until twenty years or so later.
I will of course make a note of your communication.'
