TitleCopy letter from [Dr. Arthur Schuster, Secretary of the Royal Society]; to the Secretary of His Majesty's Treasury
Date9 July 1917
DescriptionInforms His Majesty's Treasury that the Society have arrived at an agreement with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research regarding the future control of the National Physical Laboratory. Refers back to previous correspondence between the Society and the Lords of H. M. Treasure, in which the Society noted the expansion of the operations of the Laboratory, which had increased the financial responsibility of the Society to an extent that some provision for a reserved fund seemed necessary, and asked for a sum of £5000 for this fund. Notes the reply stated that, while sympathetic to relieve this financial anxiety, H. M. Treasury could not approve this proposal. By this point, the Committee of the Priory Council, for Scientific and Industrial Research had come into existence and the Society turned to their President for his views on the possibility of obtaining financial aid for the Laboratory. Notes it quickly became clear that, though willing, the Council and Department for Scientific and Industrial Research were expecting a certain passing of control of the Laboratory. Explains that, after some negotiation, the two parties have come to an agreement, and expresses hope that H. M. Treasury will consent to the scheme so that it can come into operation at an early date [not enclosed].
