| Description | Copy of a letter from [Sir William] Napier Shaw, FRS, Secretary of the Gassiot Committee, to the Meteorological Office, copies of which are now being circulated to members of the Gassiot Committee. The letter regards a proposal from the Norwegian Government to co-operate with Amundsen's polar expedition by arranging to observe and photograph the aurora, which was put before the Meteorological Committee. Notes that Shetland should be included as it is well situated due to the frequency of the phenomenon, and that the arrangements should be made by the middle of the next year. The Norwegian government report suggests Shetland should equip and maintain a station at Jan Mayen. Napier Shaw expresses that he thinks the Gassiot Committee could be of great assistance on the topic of photographing the aurora, the staff and equipment needed, and suggestions for suitable candidates to carry out the work. Requests the matter be referred to the Gassiott Committee. |
