| Description | Regarding resolutions from W [Walter] Alison Philips put to the Council of the Royal Society on 6 November, objections were raised to the first resolution as it was doubtful if the Encyclopaedia Britannica can be described as a British institution, a term that has no definite meaning. The second resolution was adopted; "In the event of the endowment of the Encyclopaedia as a British foundation, solely for the advancement of knowledge and without any idea of private profit, the Royal Society will be prepared to consider in what way it may be possible for it to cooperate in maintaining the scientific standard of the book, and its use for the general advancement of knowledge." Advises the desire of the Council is keep the question open so they can consider any complete scheme submitted to them. |
