TitleCopy letter from Robert William Frederick Harrison, Assistant Secretary of the Royal Society; to Charles Tweedie, Esq., [FRSA]
Date14 July 1919
DescriptionIn response to an enquiry regarding letters to or from James Stirling, FRS, advises there is only one from James Stirling in the catalogue, dated Glasgow 18 June 1713 and addressed to Dr Sloane. He cannot find any letters to James Stirling, but he was not an officer of the Royal Society so they would not be expected. In addition there are two papers, one on water bellows read on 21 March 1744/5, and the other on 'A remarkable darkness' dated 1762. Harrison points out the latter is probably a namesake as the place is Detroit. He advises he is unable to find a paper by [Leonhard] Euler, FRS, although he was elected a Fellow 22 January 1746, and several other papers he authored were printed in 'The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society.' He advises he knows nothing about an allusion to 'Hodgson's room,' and there was no officer or official of the Royal Society of that name that he has found. [Charles Tweedie, FRSA, wrote 'James Stirling: A Sketch of his Life and Work' (1922)].
