Title | Copy letter from Sir James Hopwood Jeans, FRS, Secretary of the Royal Society; to Sir Frank Heath, KCB [Secretary to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research]. |
Date | 2 February 1920 |
Description | Advises the Treasury agreed to increase the Government Grant from £4000 to £6000 subject to certain conditions, including; "The division of the work between the Society and the Department will remain as hitherto, ie the Society's expenditure will be confined to grants for equipment and materials, travelling expenses of investigators, in exceptional cases wages of assistants, and like expenses not involving the payment of personal remuneration to the investigator.' Says this does not match the Royal Society's regulations for administering the Government Grant, where payment of the wages of assistants is not limited to exceptional cases. Sir G Barstow has informally told Sir James Hopwood Jeans, FRS, that his intention was not to alter the conditions provided the Department was still satisfied with the arrangements. Asks if Sir Frank Heath could authorise the statment in the enclosure [not enclosed], and if confirmed, Sir Jeans will write an official letter to him. |
