TitleCopy letter from Sir James Hopwood Jeans, FRS, Secretary of the Royal Society; to the Secretary HM [His Majesty's] Treasury
Date9 February 1920
DescriptionGives the thanks of the President [Sir Joseph John Thomson, PRS] and the Council of the Royal Society to the Lord Commisioners of His Majesty's Treasury for the promised increase in the Government Grant for research, and the non-recurrent grant of £5000 to represent the surplus accruing in respect of drugs manufactured through the agency of the Royal Society. Notes the difference in the actual division of work between the Society and the Department [of Scientific and Industrial Research] and that outlined in the letter from the Treasury, and the present Government Grant regulations are less restrictive. Advises that the Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research has given assurance that the Department are satisfied with the current arrangement. The President and Council of the Royal Society are hoping therefore that they can interpret condition (c) in the letter from the Treasury as referring to the regulations as they currently stand, and the division of work between the Department and the Society will remain as it was. Also notes the Council of the Royal Society's concern regarding the provision for International Research, that the phrase used in the letter could be interpreted to refer to a broader scope of subscriptions, which in the past has cost £1250 and could now absorb the entire grant of £2000. Thinks that this is not what is intended and requests a definite statement on the limits of responsibility for these, and hopes that any uncertainty does not prevent the allocation of the sum for the ensuing year.
