TitleCopy letter from Sir James Hopwood Jeans, Secretary of the Royal Society; to the Director of the Meteorological Office [Sir William Napier Shaw, FRS]
Date27 February 1920
DescriptionAdvises that in the matter of British co-operation with the Norwegian Government in sending an expedition to Jan Mayen, the President [Sir Joseph John Thomson, PRS] and Council of the Royal Society had previously referred the question to the National Committee of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics, and this Committee sent a resolution to the Council of the Royal Society that concluded that the information before them was not sufficient to justify the considerable cost in sending an expedition and maintaining it there for two years. They were of the opinion that establishing a station in the Shetland Isles for meteorological, magnetic, and auroral observations might be of use in assisting the Norwegian expedition, and would be of value if permanently established. They recommended such as station. The Council of the Royal Society resolved to adopt this recommendation, and inform the recipient accordingly.
