Description | They yesterday received 'The Grasshopper' in Lombard Street, and White's volume of papers read before different societies, both to be laid before the Council in support of his candidature, and the former to be kept for the Royal Society library. Rix has looked through 'The Grasshopper' with great interest and sees that White mentions the palace at Mayfield where Sir Thomas Gresham once lived but White does not mention that Gresham's sword is still preserved there. Rix visited as a boy of 12 and saw the sword. Many years later he visited and was told by a sister that the item was generally called St Dunstan's sword, 'a piece of great absurdity,' but the sister was glad to have restored to her that this was none other than Gresham's weapon. |
