TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to Senhor Dr W de Lima, 113 Rua do Arco a Jesus, Lisbon
Date16 June 1893
DescriptionDiscusses Emanuel Mendes da Costa's relationship with the Royal Society and the positions he held and notes that during his position as Clerk he embezzled considerable quantities of money and acknowledged to have stolen £1492. In 1767 da Costa was deprived of his office and removed admission to the house. In 1768 it was found that a number of the Society's books and papers had been removed along with da Costa's effects. Some of these were recovered, probably not all.

Rix is curious to know whether volumes in the Public Library at Lisbon bear the stamp of the Royal Society. The Royal Society library has no copy of da Costa's 'Natural History of Fossils'.
