| Description | Foster is directed by the President and Council in acknowledging Currie's letter of 16 November, covering copies of a dispatch from Her Majesty's Ambassador at Paris, and of a letter from M Ribot, to request that Currie convey to the Earl of Rosebery their best thanks for the action he has taken and to request His Lordship to inform the French Government that of the three sites named as suitable, the English Expedition [for observation of a total eclipse of the sun in 1893] wish to occupy the one spoken of in Ribot's letter as 'le voisinage de Foundioum, sur le Saloum'.
With a view to avoiding any misunderstanding as to the passage of the gunboat up the river it may be as well to mention that the English Expedition expect to leave Bathurst for the station in a British gunboat about 3rd or 4th of April. Other details which it may be desirable to make known to the French Government, Foster shall forward very shortly. Foster is instructed to express the hope that the Earl will make known through the proper channels how warmly the Royal Society appreciate the great value of the assistance promised by the French Government, as well as the cordial manner in which it has been offered. |
