| Description | The earlier grants of which Parker speaks must have come out of the Government Fund administered by South Kensington. The present fund of £4000 began in 1876 and Parker's father's [William Kitchen Parker] personal grant appears to have commenced in that year and continued to him until 1888. Rix could easily obtain the particulars if desired.
Dr Michael Foster wished Rix to explain that Parker ought not make too much out of this personal grant, and especially of its being awarded annually for so many years. Some objection was raised latterly to this and other annual grants and there was considerable discussion on the whole matter which ended in the Government Grant regulations being altered.
All that was done at the time was done in good faith and perfectly openly but as the Society is undergoing a fire of criticism Rix thinks it as well not to give unnecessarily a handle to the enemy. |
