TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to the Secretary of Admiralty
Date14 February 1893
DescriptionFoster is directed by the President and Council, in continuation of his former letters respecting the Eclipse Expedition, to inform the Secretary that having ascertained that the mail boat for Bathurst will leave England on 18 March, reaching Bathurst about 31st March, the members of the expedition will travel to Bathurst by that boat and will only need a gunboat to convey them and their instruments from Bathurst to Foundioum on the Saloum River, and to return them again.

The observers expect to reach Bathurst on the return journey on 17th April, but it has been ascertained that the mail steamer is not timed to leave Bathurst for England until 22nd April, and may in fact be delayed several days beyond this. Such a loss of time is a very serious matter to observers who are giving their time gratuitously, to say nothing of the danger of detention in such an unhealthy spot as Bathurst. Foster is therefore directed to urge the Lords of Admiralty to direct a vessel to attend Bathurst on 17th April and convey the members of the expedition either to Gibraltar, Madeira or Tenerife. Explains why Tenerife would perhaps be best.
