Title | Copy letter from Herbert Rix, to Professor Michael Foster |
Date | 18 November 1892 |
Description | The Treasurer, [John Evans], thinks the Society should not commit itself with any very definite promise to Mr Gibson. Evans is inclined to ask Gibson only once to the gentlemen's soirée, not to put him on the permanent list. Rix wonders therefore if Foster would prefer that he answered Gibson's letter. Rix thinks that the inclosed letter to the Editor of 'Nature' [not attached] or something similar should be sent, otherwise the chances are ten to one that Hassall's paper will be published and they will have similar blunders in the future. If Foster approves of the letter it should be sent at once.
Rix does not know if Foster noticed that he omitted the Treasurer's name from the letter to Padua as one of the representatives of the Society, since Rix understood Evans was not intending to be present.
Annotated by Rix that since writing the above a circular letter has arrived from the 'Nature' office addressed to Dr Hassall to be forwarded. Rix was able to stop this but, had 'Nature' known Hassall's address it would have gone direct and Hassall's paper would have appeared in the next issue of 'Nature'. This illustrates the necessity of being explicit with Lockyer.
A 'Proceedings [of the Royal Society]' paper has come by E J Allen communicated by Professor Weldon and Rix wonders if he can set it up.
The catalougers have done all the serials they were authorised to do, and exhausted McLeod's additional list. |
