TitleCopy letter from Herbert Rix, to Professor Michael Foster, [Royal Society]
Date5 May 1894
DescriptionRix returns Miss Low's card, and explains that she does not represent the St James's Gazette, but an 'obscure women's paper' called "Hearth and Home", which is not on their list. However, last year Rix sent her a Press View ticket, but she replied that that she did not want a Press View ticket, and instead wished for a ticket for the evening, not for the purpose of viewing the exhibits, but to 'describe the dresses'. He further states that he explained the May Soiree was for men only, and so there would be only black coats and white ties, and so she applied again for the June Soiree; they again sent a Press View ticket, which was again responded to with 'indignation', and the statement that she knew Professor Ferrier and other Fellows. Rix suggested she come with one of the Fellows, but she never turned up. A postscript notes that Ferrier stated he only knew Low very slightly.

Rix does not recommend inviting her to the evening gathering, as Foster only invites two editors in rotation at the June Soiree, and no reporters are admitted except to the Press View.

He also states that the Antarctic Committee is on Wednesday at 11.30, and the Soiree Committee at 4.30. Rix has put down everything for Council except Medals. He states that as Foster wrote '10th' against all items on the previous agenda paper, he assumed it was safe, but notes that it would be easy to leave out anything for which there is no time. Rix will answer about Professor McCormack on Monday.
