TitleCopy letter from Michael Foster, to Professor Victor Horsley, Fellow of the Royal Society
Date12 July 1894
DescriptionFoster explains that the Royal Society has already exceeded its income in expenditure on publications, and is therefore forced to reduce costs, especially in the area of illustrations.

In the case of the photographs sent in with a paper as 'proofs' of statements, the Committee of Papers have decided that the practice should be to publish such drawings as necessary for the understanding of the paper, with, should the author request it, a statement to note that the photographs on which the drawings are based are available to be consulted in the Royal Society's archives. This only applies to the case of Dr Risien Russell.

Foster clarifies that for the purposes of understanding, line drawings are better than photographs and 'process' reproduction of photography, and furthermore that photographs are not actual proof of the veracity and correctness of the author, but simply eliminate any errors of reproduction between a photograph and a drawing. He asks that Horsley consider this, but that if he should prefer photographs, they will try again next year with the Treasurer's permission.
