| Description | Rix confirms that Edleston is correct, in that there is no title to the paper by Isaac Newton in the Register Book of the Royal Society, but it is indexed as 'A Discourse of ye Motion of Natural Bodys'. He further notes that the Journal Book for 10 December 1684 records that an account was given by Mr Hally that he had recently seen Newton at Cambridge and had been shown his treatise on motion, which he said was promised to be sent to the Society to entered on their Register. Further, that Hally was asked to remind Newton of his promise for the securing of his invention until a time when he can publish it, and that Mr Pagit was to join with Hally.
Rix notes that the article is not in Newton's handwriting, but in the hand of an Officer or employee of the Society. The portrait of Newton by Vanderbank which was promised to the Society by Martin Folkes hangs in the Officers' Room, and in the Meeting Room is another portrait by Vanderbank, given by Vignoles. |
