DescriptionThree quarter length, right profile prortrait of John Hunter seated outdoors in a lightly wooded landscape. Hunter rests his left hand on the head of a dog, which in turn rests its head in Hunter’s knee. The dog is a breed between the Irish Wolf Hound and English Mastiff mentioned in Philosophical Transactions vol 77 [see Hunter, John, 1787, 'Observations tending to shew that the wolf, jackal, and dog, are all of the same species' in Phil. Trans. R. Soc. 77 p.253-266]
