Date1936
Description2 letters from the Committee for the Scientific Survey of Air Defence (CSSAD) (The 'Tizard Committee').

The first of these letters (16 July 1936) opens:

'I have your letter of the 15th July, and I appreciate the way in which you have written to me personally. I should very much like to have a talk to you and to Professor Hill next week...'

The second letter (3 September 1936) reads:

'I have received the resignations of three of the unofficial members of the Committee for the Scientific Survey of Air Defence. In these circumstances I have no option but to dissolve the Committee as at present constituted'.

The folder includes a press-cutting of a later article by RW Clark (1968) stating that the resignation followed immediately on the controversial meeting on 15 July, but this was not the case. Blackett and Hill write to express their disquiet but did not resign until August.
