Description | Plate 15, figure 1 showing a fossilised ichthyosaur paddle and scapula. The painting is annotated lower left: 'Scale. Half an inch to an inch. The bones of the Paw a dull black, or brown. Ribs bluish black. The Clay slate colour.' Additionally, in pencil: 'To be reduced to 3/4 of an inch to an inch.' The fossil was in the possession of William Buckland and collected by Mary Anning. The painting is inscribed above with publication and plate details. Not signed. Royal Society stamp verso.
Subject: Palaeontology
Published in Philosophical Transactions as part of paper titled 'Some farther account of the fossil remains of an animal, of which a description was given to the Society in 1814' by Everard Home.
Read to the Royal Society on 13 June 1816. |
