The painting is taken from the body of an anonymous 21-year old servant maid who died on 15 January 1817, according to William Clift, in a very early stage of pregnancy. The work is inscribed with publication and plate details. Signed lower left 'Franz Bauer del:'. Royal Society stamp verso. Watermarked 'J Whatman 1804'.
