It doubtful the paper possesses sufficient novelty to be published in the Philosophical Transactions. If published it should be in full. The work is undoubtedly one of great labour and accuracy and presented in excellent form. The results are probably more accurate than any previous work with mercury thermometers, but since the instruments and methods are the referee's own he fears that his opinion on this point cannot be regarded as unbiased. He has difficulty in recommending the publication of this paper due to its lack of novelty and he has heard it suggested too much space has already The publication of the paper would be extremely helpful to those working with similar instruments, and discusses a number of points in connection with the testing of the instruments and reduction of results, which are important from the point of view of observatory work, and would help to give confidence in the application of the method. Concludes with a number of suggestions regarding the modification of the curves accompanying the paper.
