TitleReferee's report by Walter Frank Raphael Weldon, on a paper 'The association of attributes in statistics, with examples from the material of the Childhood Society, etc' on a paper by George Udny Yule
DateDecember 1899
DescriptionSectional committee: Mathematics

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The paper seems to be a most valuable means of applying statistical methods so as to obtain quantitative results in cases where exact numerical comparison of individual data is difficult or impossible, for instance as frequently occurs in biological enquiries. For example the correlation between the pattern on an animal's skin and some internal structural character, may be determined by Yule's method, without the enormous labour of obtaining a numerical expression for the complex pattern. As far as he is capable of judging the paper's method is sound, but it is one he is not accustomed to employ, or to think about, and he is therefore unwilling to report upon it. Professor [Olaus Magnus Friedrich Erdmann] Henrici is interested in the questions which Yule's method involves and he suggests the paper is referred to him.
