The paper should be published in Philosophical Transactions. Every portion of the paper seems to refer to the communication of Dr [Howard Turner] Barnes' paper and without it the theory of the latter might be unintelligible. It would require a minute comparison of the two papers by a person competent to deal with the mathematical portion of the work to decide if there has been unnecessary repetition. The sentence in the introduction on page 4a regarding the Joule Scholarship might be modified as it seems to imply more than it was intended to express, but as he knows little about the way in which the studentships are granted, he scarcely knows how to improve it. The illustrations appear to be necessary for the explanation of the text. The paper is rather a long preface, but it is quite natural that he should desire to claim the credit of the origination of the research which seems to have been commenced as early as 1886. It is possible that Barnes' paper does not sufficiently acknowledge the importance of Callendar's contribution to the work, in which case the production of this preface is quite justified.
