TitleReferee's report by Augustus Edward Hough Love, on a paper 'The elastic equilibrium of circular cylinders under certain practical systems of load' by Louis Napoleon George Filon
Date10 December 1901
DescriptionSectional committee: Physics and chemistry

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, in full. A table of contents would be useful. The author has not referred to an attempt made by Schiff to solve the problem of the cylinder compressed between parallel planes, 'Journal de Liouville', Seire 2, t.9, 1883, and he thinks this should be noticed. In the discussion of conditions of rupture on page 78 no account is taken of the necessary limitation of the mathematical theory of elasticity to small strains. Thinks a caution on this point is desirable. [Annotated in another hand that these points were communicated to the author]. Hopes that all the illustrations may be reproduced. It is a very favourable paper. It discusses in detail solutions to three very important problems, none of which had been solved, or not solved satisfactorily, by previous writers. It is many years since a paper of equal importance with this on the application of the theory of elasticity to practical questions has been published.
