Title | Referee's report by Joseph Johnson Thomson, on a paper 'The action of magnetised electrodes upon electrical discharge phenomena in rarefied gases' by C E S Phillips |
Date | April 1901 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Physics & Chemistry
Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions, without modifications. All the illustrations might be reproduced as woodcuts and not as plates. The author does not seem to have noticed that many of his results can be explained by the well known principle that in a strong magnetic field the negative ions follow the lines of magnetic force and so crowd into the places where these lines are densest. The phenomena of the discharge of the positive electrification in a strong magnetic field is not new. It was discovered some time ago by Warburg who made a series of very interesting experiments and measurements on this effect. There is no reference to this in the paper, doubtless the author is not aware of them. This omission should be rectified before the papers is published.
