TitleReferee's report by Augustus Edward Hough Love, on a paper 'On an approximate solution for the bending of a beam of rectangular cross-section under any system of load, with special reference to points of concentrated or discontinuous loading' by Louis Napoleon George Filon
Date12 July 1902
DescriptionSectional Committee: Mathematics

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. The parts of the paper that relate to a comparison of the author's solutions with [Adhémar Jean Claude Barré] de Venant's solution of the cantilever problem stand in need of revision. It desirable to condense the mathematical printing by making all short unnumbered formula or equations run on in the text. All the illustrations should be reproduced. It is a very important paper, no problem of discontinuous loading of a beam of finite section had been resolved before. The author has adapted his general solution to the numerical computation of a number of interesting special cases. The discovery of these general and special solutions of the equations of elastic equilibrium marks a distinct advance in the application of the mathematical theory of elasticity to practical problems.

He notes that the discussion on pages 32 and 33 of the paper seem to require modification. Compares the problem as considered on pages 26-37 with results obtained by Saint Venant for another problem, with the use of small diagrams. The author seems to have gone out of his way on pages 32-33, and on page 132, to set up against each other two methods of formulating the same theory which are essentially identical, neither of them having any real bearing upon the problem with which Filon is concerned. If the discussion on pages 32-33 is to be retained Love suggests how it might be rearranged. He details a few small improvements that might be made in points of detail, for instance requests for clarification with reference to equations on particular pages of the manuscript.
