TitleReferee's report by Samuel Hawksley Burbury, on a paper 'The distribution of molecular energy' by James Hopwood Jeans
Date26 July 1900
DescriptionSectional committee: Physics and chemistry

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transaction' in part only and lists various suggested omissions with page references given to the original manuscript. The figures at the end will not be needed if the paper is to modified according to his suggestions. Jeans makes expressly or by implication all the usual assumptions regarding the law of equal partition. Jeans should thus assume the law. Does not say that Jeans' proofs are not good ones per se, but they add nothing to our knowledge and nothing to the cogency of Bottyman's proofs. Jeans assures that the system is 'unarranged' but makes no use of this as a substantive assumption nor does he explain what he means by it.
