TitleReferee's report by George Ballard Mathews, on a paper 'The Basic-Gamma-Function and the Elliptic Functions' by Reverend F H Jackson
DateDecember 1904
DescriptionSectional Committee: Mathematics

Recommended for publication in Philosophical Transactions. It contains analytical results of great elegance, and by introducing an additional symbol the author obtains a generalized gamma-function which includes that discussed by Barnes and others as a particular case. Whether this function is likely to prove of fundamental importance, he is not prepared to say, but its properties and relations to elliptic and other functions are sufficiently interesting to make the publication of this paper desirable. Jackson's work hitherto has not appeared to Mathews 'very strongly'. He likes the paper better than its predecessor because it has 'definite contact with function-theory of undoubted importance'; it is for this reason mainly that he recommends its publication.
