TitleReferee's report by Hugh Longbourne Callendar, on a paper 'Explosions of mixtures of coal-gas and air in a close vessel' by Leonard Bairstow and A D Alexander
DateMarch 1905
DescriptionSectional Committee: Physics and Chemistry

The paper is unsuitable for Philosophical Transactions. The paper contains a great deal of useful work, but the conclusions are indefinite, and it can hardly be said to mark a distinct step in advance. Much of the interpretation of the results appears to be erroneous. The method is not novel and it may be doubted whether definite conclusions of any value could be obtained with coal gas of variable composition without elaborate analysis of the gas and products in each experiment.
