Title | Letter from Robert Kidston, regarding a paper 'On the present distribution and origin of the calcareous concretions in coal seams, known as "coal balls"' by M C Stopes and David Meredith Seares Watson |
Date | 13 July 1907 |
Description | Sectional Committee: Botany and Geology Recommended for publication, but not necessarily in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. Comments on the number of student research papers being submitted to the Royal Society, and suggests that the Society is being used by students as a way of gaining favour when applying for appointments, to say their paper has been published by the Royal Society. Suggests this is a matter the Council should look into. Suggests that the feeling 'abroad' is that the Society is being used as advertising, 'which is altogether derogatory to its position'. Cannot see 'any special reason' why the paper should be published in the Philosophical Transactions, notwithstanding that it contains matter of real scientific interest'.
