TitleReferee's report by George Biddell Airy, on a paper 'On uniform rotation' by Charles William Siemens
Date29 May 1866
DescriptionNot recommended for publication in the 'Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society'. Suggests an alternate title. Refers to the apparatus of the 'gyrometric governor'. Considers some of the theory to be unnecessary and part to be doubtful. Thinks that the apparatus might be useful, but prefers the Chronometric Governor, an earlier invention of the same author. The principles and formulae are of great value, 'but of new mechanical contrivances. The philosophical Transactions ought not to be used as the place for publishing such schemes'. Suggests the author made a mistake in sending the paper to the Royal Society, and it should have been sent to a periodical of civil and mechanical engineering.
