TitleAllibone Stamp Collection
Date1990
DescriptionThe first two volumes were assembled in the sequence of the date at which each Fellow was elected to the Society, the last being HRH The Princess Royal (FRS 1989) on page 8, and are accompanied by short notes. An Addendum included stamps acquired after this date, but they were mounted in order of accession, and therefore a particular Fellow can only be found via the Index at the back of each volume. Some of the stamps in Volume 3 are duplicates of the Fellows portrayed in previous volumes, but they have been included where the original stamp was of poor design, as in the early Swedish stamps in which Nobel Prizemen are shown in profile, spaced so tightly it is not easy to recognize each Fellow.

AdminHistoryTwo volumes of postage stamps presented to the Royal Society in 1990 which included some items from the collection of the donor, some purchased in Britain or from foreign dealers. Two of the albums were funded by Professor Andre Gabor, brother of Dennis. A History of Science grant funded the work of tracing and assembling the stamps. Additional stamps were however appearing both in Britain and abroad, and Allibone therefore decided to continue the collection. By 1996 an additional 160 foreign and British stamps had been collected, and a third volume became necessary.
