Mr John Fletcher Moulton, QC, FRS.
A Wesleyan Minister became his father at Madeley six-and-fifty years ago; and froma Bath school he went to st. John's, Cambridge: where his acquired tastes (assisted by Dr. Routh) improved him into Senior Wrangler, First Smith Prizeman, and a Fellow and Lecturer at Christ's. As Cambridge did not keep him bust enough he also became a London Gold Medallist and Master of Arts. At thirty he got called to the Bar; and did so well that eleven more years got him within it. He is a Fellow of several Socities, a Chevalier de Legion d'Honneur, and a Liberal who has sat for Clapham, for Hackney, and for that Launceston Division of Cornwall for which he is now candidate. He is an able fellow whose word on a patent is practically law: consequently his word on a patent is in great request, and for it he receives big fees. His practice brings him in much gain; and, though he is a wicked Liberal, he considers himslef an Advanced Thinker. He knows all about the discharge of electricity through rarefied gases, and he is generally quite scientific as well as a legal person.
He is a rare example of the mathematical mind triumphant. |
