Sir Thomas Barlow
Sir Thomas Barlow was born in Lancashire; his speech betrayeth him. He has risen by a quiet, unassuming manner, some tact, and much knowledge of medicine to a high place in his profession. Queen Victoria made him her Physician Extraordinary, and was much attached to him; to King Edward he owes the post of Physician to His Majesty's Household. He is, moreover, Physician to the King Edward's Hospital, to the University College Hospital, and has been Physician to the London Fever Hospital and to the Children's Hospital, Great Ormond Street. He is a member of the Senate of London University. Sir Thomas is an advocate for, though not a fanatic of, Temperance. He is an omnivorous reader, and succeeds in getting though a vast amount of literature, not always ephemeral, while travelling or driving. Books have ever formed the bulkiest part of his luggage. He is interested in archaeology in the open air, and shows a strong disposition to linger over historical sites. He consumes meals rapidly and at irregular hours.
He has an unequalled reputation in the treatment of children, and knows exactly what to say to anxious parents. Children, indeed take to him at once, and mothers admire him. He is tactful in consultation, and avoids his neighbours' corns while doing his duty. He prefers motors to horses.
