DescriptionPapers of application from the University of Oxford to the Wolfson Foundation for a grant towards a Chair in Metallurgy (Isaac Wolfson Professorship in Metallurgy). By funding metallurgy in this way, it is suggested, the Foundation will 'enable [the country] to keep the lead we have now obtained in Nuclear Energy and ensure that the work to be done will give increasing emphasis to the benefits of the peaceful developments of Nuclear energy'. The file contains reports on the progress of the department of Metallurgy, as well as financial reporting and refers to the purchase of scientific apparatus from the Royal Society.

The application letter names Dr Hume Rothery, Fellow of the Royal Society, who went on to become the first holder of the Isaac Wolfson Chair of Metallurgy, and also includes some letters from Hume Rothery. Students of Hume Rothery are named as: Dr John Wyrill Christian, Fellow of the Royal Society; Dr J W Martin; Dr S L Altmann; Dr A Hellawell.

Also referred to in support of the application are Sir John Cockroft, Fellow of the Royal Society and Dr Finniston, then Chief Metallurgist of the Atomic Energy Authority.

The application was made to the Wolfson Foundation's 'Science and Medicine' programme area.
