Lecturer in pure mathematics (1903); joined the University of London Officers' Training Corps (1926-1932); partook in active service with the British expeditionary force in France, invalided home (1915); Goldsmith chair of applied mathematics and mechanics, succeeding Karl Pearson (FRS 1896) (1912); commanded the 2nd battalion London regiment, and was demobilised (1919); later served as technical staff of the Admiralty air service, and of the Air Board; took an active role in the affairs of the University of London as a member of the senate (1920); and the court, dean of the faculty of science, and chairman of the academic council (1924–33); director of the university observatory (1929-1937); died of typhoid.
